Roots and History of Some Words (This one is Colloquial)

The word Etymology has been sticking in my head since yesterday and I was wondering what it exactly meant. So, I thought of 'Wiki' ing the word and here is what it means - Etymology is the study of the roots and history of words. I was thrilled to read the whole section about it, till such time I was struck with this thought of how some people use words without thinking, those that don't have a concrete meaning and those which have no roots, whatsoever!

Let me quote some of the examples in Kannada, just for laughs :)

Prayer of sorts

I’ve always felt very positive and happy after having prayed in a chapel. It has been this way from my school days, a beautiful chapel that it was, in our school, which was to me - powerful. Having studied in a Convent institution, we, as students were occasionally made to pray in the chapel and were assured that our prayers were instantly heard if prayed quietly in front of the altar. We all know that prayers for that matter, are heard irrespective of where one prays, be it in a temple, a mosque, in a chapel and irrespective of its ways – silent, aloud, in the form of a song and so on. It is that tender and timid force, which comes from deep within us, that, we seek help from the almighty for, and that spur of time when our soul subconsciously interact.

It was really long since I’d been to a chapel until yesterday, when I suddenly felt the urge to visit one that is very close to my work place, here in London. I everyday walked passed the church for a year and never dropped in even once. No precise reason for it though, probably, just busy carrying on with my routine very monotonously. Yesterday, at noon, was casually missing my folks and started to just recite a prayer while I took a break for lunch. From deep within myself, the thought to visit the chapel nearby, flashed. I immediately took a stroll towards it, all geared, but unfamiliar with its service and restrictions. The church looked massive and gorgeous. A person with a warm smile greeted me and advanced the Bible, perhaps, with a thought that I was there for the noon service. I quietly told him that I’d come there to pray, but since it was my first visit I did not know where the chapel was. I told him that I didn’t want to disturb if the service had started and that I would come another time. He kindly showed me the way to the chapel and said that it was quiet and peaceful there.
Felt elated as I entered, I prayed and was pretty emotional. Kneeling down, eyes shut, I felt as if I were talking to someone, just speaking my entire mind out. What a feeling that was! I left the place feeling extremely positive and strong.

Conquering Patience

I sometimes feel developing a good amount of patience is Rocket Science indeed. We come across different kinds of people in our lives, some possess tremendous amount of patience and some lack to the core. In my case, since I lack a fair amount of patience, I desperately feel the urge to conquer patience for my own good – me being one tough and aggressive cookie around. But, in reality, it seems incredibly difficult. Here, I crib about the fact that, being the daughter of that lovely couple whose patience level is sky-high, how on earth I haven’t got it in my blood? Had it been natural to me, had I inherited that quality, things would have been easy.

When hubby is not around, while missing him madly, I recollect all our recent arguments that had left us hurt or even look back at my immature reactions to his un adulterated nagging. It then hits me and makes me quickly type a text or call him apologising for all my stupid responses (although the apologies would have been exchanged earlier) and assuring to take things less aggressive then on. Soon after that, I typically decide to strive hard to gain patience, try and change to be nicer sober person and to think nearly 100 times before reacting. But, I m not an achiever here at all …coz’ when my husband is back, while having a lovely koochi-kooing, blissful life, when he floats a serious topic and when there is a debate, I end up losing my cool, again getting back to square 1. What happened to those promises I made for myself? Why am I not able to have patience? Why do I react without thinking? Why do I flash those harsh sentences? Why is there a graph in my tone? And only at the end, why do I realise that my sweet other half is just back and that I should resist un pleasant talks, that I should give in sometimes….. Oh! it really feels difficult to be patient. Yes, I do know that all this comes by practise and experience, but, Lord! When will I be able to conquer that patience? Will I ever … is the question. And here is why I say, To me, it feels like Rocket Science!

What's the Weather Like?

Hola! It’s been a while since I wrote anything at all in my blog coz’ of the same old complaints - busy life, hectic work, guests pouring in etc. But, am I seeking excuses to do something that I'd love to, that relaxes me – writing? I don’t wish to write something just for the heck of it or to while my time away scribbling something that makes no sense, but today, couldn’t resist talking about how Brits cannot do away without holding a discussion about the weather.

In England, people are ever thrilled, ever interested in discussing the weather. It makes you wonder and ponder thoroughly seeing how people manage to primarily discuss about the weather, either in the beginning, amidst, or at the end of their conversation. As per my observation, this very topic interests them so much that, should you hold a different opinion to theirs, then, you might get ‘You are not normal’ kind of a look. Of course, acknowledging them realistically comes natural, but, if for some reasons, you feel the opposite, then you are sure to be nagged in a very sarcastic manner. Rule – never contradict anybody when discussing the weather. Should it get hot, burn everything to ashes, rain crazily or snow, and should someone tell you “Lovely weather isn’t it”? - respond without thinking “Isn’t it great?”

Examples:

In summer,

“Nice day, isn’t it?”
“Isn’t it wonderful?”
“It is Bright and Gorgeous”
“You feel so good when it’s nice and warm – don’t you?”
“The sun…I love it”.

During Winter/Rainy/Snow

“Oh! Such a horrible day, isn’t it?
“Isn’t it nasty?”
“The rain/snow … I hate it”.
“Makes me depressed…”
“It was better last Nov, wasn’t it?”
“Yes it was”.
Or, was it the year before that?”
“Yeah, I guess so”.

Ironically, so to speak, you would soon realise that you are also slowly getting influenced picking up these weather interrogations yourself. Like how each time I call my mum/sis anyone who is not in the UK and in the course of our conversation, I do actually enquire about the weather there! I realised it when my mum commented lately saying “Why do you ask about the weather every other time you talk to me? You know how the weather in Bangalore around this time of the year, would be – don’t you”? :)
